That power packed word. What does it mean, is it important and how do I do it?
I think we’ve confused creativity for something tangible.
Creativity isn’t the ‘thing’ that you can make.
It’s a state of mind, an awareness, an “ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena,” (creativityatwork.com).
Creativity. When you use your treasure trove of experiences, knowledge you've attained, intuitive feeling and allow it all to guide you.
Allow it to open up new pathways, interactions and indeed, sometimes inspire you to make something.
It is one of the core foundations to leading a happy life!
Which is just one reason why it's so important to understand and to acknowledge.
I find that when I allow the creative side of the self to lead me, I often have the best most spontaneously brilliant experiences - like when I met Benedict Cumberbatch just as I was questioning whether or not to connect with filmmaking and acting again.. or when I went on a whim to a gallery where one of my favourite creatives (Noel Fielding) paints, and ended up making incredible friends, wrote LOADs of poems and birthed the deeper parameter of this idea… (idea being Hannah’s Umbrella).
And no, creativity is not just about the 'arts.'
In every waking moment, we are being creative, whether you realise it or not.
From the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the conversations you have, the way you’ve planned your day, even the day dreams you have, you are always being creative.
And it is vital for us to recognise and embrace this side of ourselves. The more that we identify with creative aspects of ourselves, the more open and balanced we become as people. The more expressive we become and the more open to others expressions we become it turn.
A kinder, balanced and more creative life... sounds rad don't you think?
Start in small steps if you're only just welcoming this side of yourself again.
Start with planning your day with a sense curiosity and creativeness even by simply taking a different route to work; or find a new outfit for the day that truly expresses you, or be more inventive with the language you use to order your coffee this morning, heck have your dessert BEFORE your dinner just to shake things up. Just do something - consciously.
You never know. You might find that you get a liking for it, and look for other ways you can be creative!
Let me know the ways you're engaging with your creative self!
